Wilmington University’s Legal Studies program was granted approval by the American Bar Association last week.

The ABA determined that the program, within the College of Arts and Sciences, provides a quality paralegal education and satisfies stringent requirements set forth by the Standing Committee on Paralegals. Therefore, it approved the curriculum, faculty, recruiting and admission practices, library and computer resources and student services inherent in the program.

“This approval validates the time, energy, and effort that our faculty and advisory board have put into creating a quality program for our students,” said Amy O’Dell, Esq., program coordinator for Legal Studies.

Wilmington University began offering a bachelor of science in legal studies in the fall of 2003. The curriculum is designed to prepare students to become paralegals or legal assistants working under the supervision of an attorney or to continue their studies in law.

Courses include such topics as,’ Legal Writing’, ‘Criminal Law’, ‘Civil Procedure’, and ‘LSAT Preparation,’ among others.

WU officials hope the ABA approval will help generate new professional development opportunities for students through the Delaware Paralegal Association as well as expand their employment options nationwide, O’Dell said.

For more information on the Legal Studies program at Wilmington University, an Information Session is being hosted at the New Castle campus on Monday, August 24 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. The Information Session will be held in room 308 of the Audrey K.
