DelDOT will close Route 4 between Route 72 and Route 896 for one week beginning Monday, July 13 to construct safety improvements.
Crews from Norfolk Southern Corporation will raise the railroad tracks and smooth out the road surface, then repave Route 4. They will also install automatic crossing gates and lights.
Local traffic will have access to Route 4, but no through-traffic will be allowed during the closure.
DelDOT recommends westbound drivers turn left at Route 72, Right at U.S. Route 40, right onto Route 896 and then back to Route 4. Eastbound drivers can turn right on Route 896, left at U.S. Route 40, left on Route 72 and then back to Route 4.
Drivers who choose to use Old Baltimore Pike as a detour should expect long delays because of increased traffic volume, DelDOT said.
DART routes 33 and 39 will end at the Newark Transit Hub during the closure and the section of missed bus stops will be served by a free shuttle bus, which will operate between 5:20 a.m. and 11:45 p.m. on weekdays and between 6:45 a.m. and 8:40 p.m. on Saturday. Route 55 will serve downtown Newark during the closure.
