Delaware College of Art and Design President Stuart Baron is spending the first few months of his new job acclimating himself with people in the community and developing relationships with key stakeholders and elected officials.

His priorities include improving the college Web site to better reflect the institution, creating named scholarships and building an endowment.

“The community is deeply invested in DCAD and I want to build on that commitment,” Baron said. “My job is to be the person who articulates the future of the school and why it is so critical for people to support it.”

Baron took the helm July 1. He was previously the associate dean for faculty research, development and advancement at the College of Art + Design at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge. Among other things, he also served as director of the School of Visual Arts at Boston University from 1989 to 1996, director of the School of Art at Louisiana State University in 2003 and interim associate dean of the College of Art + Design last summer.

Originally from New Castle, Pa., Baron spent most of his life in Boston, Mass., earning both a bachelor’s and master’s degree in painting from Boston
University.

He replaced James P. Lecky, who led the school since it opened in 1997 and stepped down June 30.

DCAD was formed in 1997 as the result of an educational partnership between Pratt Institute and the Corcoran College of Art + Design in Washington, D.C.
