Howard High School junior forward Lamont Davis is not a top scorer for the Wildcat basketball team, but he surely makes every minute on the court count.
Davis scored five points (four on highlight reel dunks) and along with 12 second-half points from senior forward Khiry Clark, helped the Wildcats rally again on the road for a 43-39 win over Flight B foe Brandywine Tuesday night.
“When I come off the bench, my job is to rebound and block shots. Points come last,” Davis said. ”When I go up, I‘m thinking ‘Dunk it as hard as you can.‘ It gets us hyped up and it helps us win like we did tonight.”
“Lamont is the X-factor for Howard,” Wildcats head coach Chris DiMascio said. “There’s no question, his athletic ability is second to none. He is a walking highlight reel, when he goes up for a dunk, it’s not going to be a soft one.”
Davis struck in the second quarter when junior guard Larry Woody threw the ball off the backboard to an already-rising Davis who slammed it home with two hands to get both sides of the gym fired up and give Howard their first lead of the game.
The second dunk, a breakaway jam with 90 seconds left in the fourth quarter gave the Wildcats (9-3 overall, 6-2 Flight B) a 39-37 lead. This came after Howard trailed by eight points twice in the third quarter, but rallied behind Clark’s 10 points in the period.
“I’m not really a shooter, but I knew I had to calm the hot heads down,” Clark said as he playfully shook Davis standing beside him. “I’m the laid back one on the team.”
DiMascio agreed.
“Our seniors, Khiry, Tyrone Brown, they’re the opposite of me, I’m the more excitable type,” DiMascio said.
“When they’re on the floor, I know we’re going to be alright because we’ve got guys who have been there before.”
Brandywine (8-4 overall, 4-3 Flight B) got 12 points from senior guard Jamal Davis and eight from fellow senior Jordan Purnell, but Bulldogs coach Steve Christensen lamented the missed opportunities Brandywine had on the offensive end.
“We missed 10 or 12 layups and you can’t expect to win a game doing that,” he said.
The Bulldogs have lost 4 of their last 5 after a 7-0 start and Christensen hopes their fortunes will change shortly.
“We don’t have time for a hangover,” he said of the recent rough stretch. “We’ll get it together. The guys are working hard and doing everything we ask of them. Things just aren’t going our way right now.”
