As Charter School of Wilmington girls basketball coach Eileen Voltz discussed her team’s 60-48 victory of Tower Hill Saturday afternoon, two of her players ran up to her with an envelope.
It turned out to be a birthday card for the coach, who celebrated her special day with special performances from senior center Kelly Perillo (20 points) and freshman forward Megan Waltz (17 points).
“Our kids really played great today, we were able to get scoring contributions from everybody,” Voltz said. “I think if we continue to play like this, we can cause some match-up problems for other teams.”
The Force (11-2 overall, 6-0 Flight A) led wire to wire but were unable to shake the tenacious Hillers until the final half of the fourth quarter when Perillo and Waltz combined for 12 of Charter’s last 17 points to open up a double digit lead.
“I know Kelly is going to get a lot of the attention so I just wanted to play hard and make my shots,” Waltz said.
Tower Hill (7-3 overall, 1-1 Independent Conference) were led by Jenna Chodos (13 points) and Sophia McCoy (12 points), with head coach Amanda Blackstone hopeful they can put a tough game behind them as they begin the second half of their season.
“We’ve played 10 games and we have 10 games left. We have a lot of lacrosse and soccer players who are getting used to basketball, so we’ve got to learn to play 32 minutes and not just 20,” Blackstone said. “Charter just played a better game near the end.”
And the Force were happy to get their coach a birthday win.
“It was really exciting, I feel like she deserves it,” Waltz said.
“It’s a really good feeling. We wanted to give her a nice present,” Perillo added.
