The Issue:
According to the group’s website, www.mphsknights.com (a pre-existing domain), Occupy Brandywine School District is a not-for-profit movement of parents, teachers, students and alumni seeking “a fair environment to work and learn.”
The movement’s primary goal is to stop the 2012 Brandywine School District referendum for raising property taxes.
What’s Happened:
The Occupy Brandywine School District movement is relatively new to the scene. There were rumblings that members would attend the Brandywine School Board meeting on Monday, Nov. 14, but no one showed. The movement encourages citizens to occupy school board meetings and eventually the polling places only. Members ask those in support of the movement to dress in black to show solidarity.
“Since many of us are employed by the district, we need to operate within a realm of discretion at this time. Our grievances and suggestions for improvement are online. We encourage residents of the district to participate in our social media discussions too. Our primary objective for the New Year is to defeat the unnecessary referendum. We do not think it is fair to our community to raise property taxes again. As insiders, we know existing resources can be better managed,” said Cindy, an organizer who is unwilling to give her last name.
“Whenever a district goes to referendum, there is bound to be opposition,” said Mark Holodick superintendent for the district. “Especially in this challenging economic climate, I am not surprised that there are people who are already opposed without knowing what the referendum will include. The particular site referenced seems to be the work of an individual with an axe to grind against me personally rather than a site that is based on fact. We will continue to work hard and do what is best for the 10,800+ children we educate every day to prepare them for college and careers upon graduation.”
