In a match-up of youth vs. youth, the Mount Pleasant High School wrestling team had just enough experience to best Blue Hen Conference Flight B rival Howard High School of Technology, taking a 42-40 victory Wednesday afternoon at Howard.

“Today, our guys finally started executing moves that we’ve been trying to teach, so that’s a positive for us,” Green Knights head coach Dionie Lum said. “We have eight freshmen, six who have wrestled in junior high, so our goal is to have these guys learn from their mistakes by the time our conference meets come around.”

The Green Knights (1-2 overall, 1-0 Flight B) got pins from Ryan Irving (113 pounds), Dominick James (138 pounds) and Stephen Mousely (170 pounds) highlighting a 34-22 start for Mount Pleasant.

Howard (1-2 overall, 1-2 Flight B) took advantage of some strength in the heavier classes, getting pins from Jeffrey Lewis, DaQuan Dollard and Manny Cobb, all weighing over 170 pounds. The Wildcats also got a pin from Cameron Monroe (120 pounds) and major decisions from David Chardonnet (145 pounds) and Tyler Hughart (220 pounds).

“This is the first time in years that we’ve had a full team, but we’re young and we only have two seniors,” Wildcats head coach Patrick Mulhern said. “If they continue to work together, work hard and make weight, then we’re going to have a very good team here.”
