New Castle County Councilman Tim Sheldon (D-Pike Creek), along with New Castle County Police Senior Cpl. Mike Sneed and Sgt. Patrick Malone held a community meeting at Linden Hill Elementary on Thursday, Dec. 15 to inform Pike Creek and Hockessin residents about the rise in residential burglaries and what residents can do to prevent them from occurring.

Here are some numbers to know about recent burglaries in the area, courtesy of the New Castle County Police Department.

  • 40 Burglaries in Hockessin and Pike Creek in November, 2011.
  • 5 Break-ins within the last three weeks.
  • 2,000 Average number of burglaries in New Castle County in a given year.
  • 42% Units that were burglarized and unsecured.
  • 2,700 Thefts from motor vehicles in the first 11 months of 2010.

Malone told people to look after their neighbors and to report anything that looks suspicious, which includes suspicious persons, cars and behavior. He said that the majority of the recent burglaries have been high-dollar burglaries due to the rise in value of gold. Malone said most burglars who are looking to steal jewelry will enter the home, take a pillowcase, and fill it with jewelry because it is easy to carry out and sell at the nearest pawn shop.
