The accolades for police in Sussex County continued this week.
Less than a week after Georgetown Police Chief William Topping was named chief of the year by the Delaware League of Local Governments, the Millsboro Police Department announced its own Lt. Brian Calloway was honored as the League’s municipal officer of the year.
“I was definitely very surprised and honored that I was selected,” Calloway said of the award, presented at a Sept. 28 banquet in Dover. “It’s not very often an officer from a small municipality is recognized.”
Calloway has been with the Millsboro department for more than a decade and is currently the CALEA (Communications Assistance for Law Enforcement Act) manager for the department.
He also formed and heads the department’s motor unit, oversees the school resource officer program and was instrumental in developing the Citizens Police Academy and Business Police Academy. He has received life saving awards on two occasions.
“It’s tremendously gratifying to see we had someone on our staff that led to an award like that,” Millsboro Chief John Murphy said. “If anyone deserves it, it’s Brian. He went through the ranks, did everything he was supposed to do and then some.”
