LONG NECK, DEL. —

When Labor Day Long Neck rolls around each year, plenty of people opt to sail to the celebration instead of driving, and if they should find themselves in need of boat parts, there’s a whole separate party just down the road.

Short’s Marine will holds its 24th annual Labor Day Weekend Event at their Long Neck Road location, bringing even more folks to the area for the holiday.

“Thousands of people come out every year for the event,” said Short’s Marine Marketing Director Hope Thomas. “Not only do we hold our annual sale with some of the lowest prices around, but there is also entertainment and food all weekend.”

This year, Boy Scout Troop 105 will provide grilled food and drinks throughout the sale and celebration, with 100 percent of the proceeds going to benefit the troop, which is based in the Long Neck area.

And because their employees are so busy working the marine event, Short’s contributes financially each year to the Labor Day Long Neck celebration.

“We also have U.S. Coast Guard officials on hand, who will be provided safety information and courses for adults, as well as safety-themed coloring books for kids,” Thomas said.

Blood Bank of Delaware officials will also supply information to attendees.

“Also, for the first time this year, the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company will have their fire prevention trailer on-site, as well as one of their antique fire trucks,” she said.

Short’s gates open at 8 a.m. on Sept. 2, and Thomas said the flea-market style of the boat-tag sale has people lined up with their eyes on the prize as early as 7:30 a.m.

“Buyers pull the tag from a boat and it’s theirs,” she said.

Short’s Marine’s Labor Day Weekend event runs Sept. 2-4. For more information, call 945-7379 or e-mail hthomas@shortsmarine.com.
