GOP gubernatorial candidate Bill Lee joined lieutenant governor candidate Charles Copeland in Claymont yesterday (Oct. 9) to announce their plans to split the Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control, DNREC, into "DNR" and "EC," if elected, divorcing the agency's enforcement component from other functions. Lee also launched a new Web site attacking Markell on financial issues.
Lee wanted to focus on the enforcement component of the agency, particularly as it related to environmental laws for Delaware's large-scale polluters.
"When I ran in 2004, I stated that our air and water were at risk. Now, as we see more definite proof of cancer clusters, there can be no doubt," Lee said on his Web site. "Delawareans deserve better than a governor who lets the big corporations run wild and pollute our air and water with no consequences.
"In my administration, there will be consequences. In addition, we will release specific data on cancer clusters back five years, including specific cancers. This is a life-or-death issue."
Lee also pledged to double the number statewide air-quality monitoring offices within his first year in office, if elected.
Additionally, Lee's newest Web site, www.TheRealJackMarkell.com, delves into Markell's time as a Nextel executive, as well as his "Blueprint for a Better Delaware" booklet, which Lee has called "Jack's billion-dollar booklet" and said is not a realistically affordable option for the state.
