The men’s team from Wilmington, representing the USTA Middle States Section, captured the national title at the USTA League 4.5 Adult National Championships held at the Jim Reffkin Tennis Center in Tucson, Ariz. from Oct. 28 to Oct. 30.
The Wilmington team defeated a team from Tarzana, Calif., 4-1, in the Championship match. Earlier in the day, the Wilmington team defeated a team from Seattle, Wash., 3-2, in the semifinals. They advanced this far by winning their round-robin flight contested Friday and Saturday.
The team is captained by Christopher Kyper, and features John Ellis, Trevor Anderson, Jared Howat, Joseph Ferry, Alex Tanzio, Oliver Jones, Ryan Gargullo, Nicholas Gallagher, Russell Chamberlin and Jason Goldman-Petri and plays at the Penn Oaks Racquet Club.
The top four teams in order of finish are: Middle States (Wilmington, Del.), Southern California (Tarzana), Southern (Greenville, S.C.) and Pacific Northwest (Seattle, Wash.).
This year’s USTA League 4.5 Adult National Championship has drawn the top 34 teams (17 men’s and 17 women’s) from throughout the nation.
USTA League is celebrating its 31st anniversary this year. Established in 1980, it has grown from 13,000 participants in a few parts of the country in its first year, to over 779,000 players across the nation today, making it the world’s largest recreational tennis program.
