The Kirkwood Soccer Club Freedom girls under-14 team won the 2008 U.S. Youth Soccer Association National Directors Cup Championship.
In all, eight U.S. Youth Soccer National Directors Cup Champions were crowned from each of the under-14 through under-17 age groups for boys and girls. Games were played at the Kirkwood Soccer complex.
Kirkwood Freedom U14 was the only local team to make it to the finals.
Freedom had lost to Texas Rush Nike (S. Texas) in round robin play July 19, but they avenged that loss the next day.
Two minutes into the game, Casey Harney put Freedom up 1-0 when she put one past the keeper. Teammate Amy Stevens followed up with a goal in the 38th minute to give Freedom a 2-0 lead.
A strong defensive presence from the Freedom rejected any shots from the Rush to secure the championship title for Freedom.
Earlier this summer, the Freedom girls were also the recipients of the "Fair Play" award at the Region 1 tournament held in Maine.
