Piedmont U18 baseball team wins Riptide RumbSports championship

The Piedmont 18-and-under baseball team, based in Hockessin, won the Riptide Rumble tournament held at the Sports at the Beach complex in Georgetown earlier this autumn. Georgetown, Del. —

The Piedmont under-18 baseball team won the 2008 Riptide RumbleSports championship held at Sports at the Beach in Georgetown earlier this autumn.

The team is composed of mostly Hockessin-based Piedmont Babe Ruth Alumni who have played together since they were 9-year-olds. They went 3-1 to secure the championship.

Alex Woods was chosen MVP of the championship game going 3 for 4 with a triple and three runs scored.

Piedmont was also led offensively in the tournament by Fielding Wooters (.667 avg. 5 runs), Tyler Husfelt (.583 avg., 4 RBI) and Matt Farr (4 RBI). The team was seeded third after the preliminary rounds and swept through the semi-finals and finals, beating the Tri State Arsenal 15-8 in the final game.

Pitchers Shawn Cowgill, Matt Joyce, Kyle Richter, and Jimmy Marshallsea combined for the three wins with Joyce (1-0, 0.00 ERA) and Richter (1-0 0.22 ERA) each throwing complete games. Jimmy Marshallsea also contributed with a walk off single in the semi-final game against the Maryland Red Dogs 2-1.

The team is playing together through out the fall baseball season.
