A routine traffic stop for a suspended license plate Thursday evening netted New Castle Police more than 3.5 grams of heroin and charges against two area men.

Deshawn Chase, 23, of the unit block of Thorn Lane in the community of Rosegate, New Castle, was charged with possession with the intent to deliver heroin, possession of heroin, driving with a suspended license, failure to have insurance identification in possession and suspended registration. Chase was being held at the Howard Young Correctional Institute in lieu of $36,000 bail.

According to a report, members of New Castle's Mobile Enforcement Team were on patrol at 6:35 p.m. Thursday when they saw a vehicle heading north on New Castle Avenue with a suspended registration, allegedly driven by Chase. After initiating the stop, they found that Chase was wanted on an outstanding warrant and he was arrested.

During the stop, police also arrested Jeremy Johnson, 23, of the unit block of 24th Street, Wilmington, after they found that he, too, was wanted on an outstanding warrant. According to police, Johnson allegedly first identified himself as his brother, leading to a charge of criminal impersonation. He was being held at the Howard Young Correctional Institute in lieu of $1,000 bail on the existing warrant and new charge.

During a search of Chase's vehicle, officers allegedly found a total of 142 individual baggies of heroin, totaling 3.55 grams.
