Newark —
A Wilmington man faces a various charges after an incident early Sunday in which Newark police allege that he strangled and raped a teenager before throwing her out of a second-story window.
John A. Nelson, 20, of Wilmington, was charged with first-degree attempted murder, first-degree rape, first-degree kidnapping, first-degree burglary, strangulation, assault and criminal mischief. Nelson was being held at the Howard R. Young Correctional Institution in lieu of $286,600 bail.
According to a report, officers responded around 1 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 29, to a large party at a residence in the unit block of Academy Street, across from the Aetna Fire Station. As they began clearing a large crowd leaving the party, officers heard screams for help at the rear of the residence. They found the 17-year-old female on the ground beneath a second-floor window, being helped by several party-goers.
Investigators learned that the victim had been alone in a locked second-floor bedroom when Nelson, an acquaintance, allegedly kicked in the door. When the victim attempted to flee, Nelson reportedly struggled with her, allegedly grabbing her by the throat and strangling her until she was unconscious, a report said. According to police, Nelson allegedly then sexually assaulted the victim before throwing her from the second-floor window.
The victim was admitted to Christiana Hospital where she underwent surgery for her injuries, including a broken arm and punctured lung. She remains hospitalized.
