Hockessin, Del. —

Beenu Gupta, a teacher at The Charter School of Wilmington, has been awarded the 2008 Outstanding Environmental Educator Award by the Delaware Nature Society.

Since 1982, the society has conducted a statewide competition to identify and recognize school teachers who are enthusiastic and creative in teaching their students about the natural world.

Gupta teaches biology and Advanced Placement biology. As the coordinator for Wilmington Charter’s Science Olympiad and Envirothon teams, Gupta has motivated her students to receive awards at local and national levels.

The students have captured first place in both competitions each of the past five years, and the 2005 and 2007 Envirothon teams placed 3rd in North America.

“Because of Mrs. Gupta, I am better prepared to go out into the world and make my own educated decisions,”  said one student, Tonima R. Quabili.
