The Delaware Higher Education Commission has announced the recipients of five state merit scholarship programs for the 2009-2010 academic year.
Students compete for merit scholarships based their academic performance, participation in school activities and service to the community. They apply for Delaware merit scholarships in their senior year of high school, and all five awards are renewable.
Three of the programs are memorial scholarships that honor state legislators and provide full tuition, fees, room, board and books at the public colleges in Delaware.
Christine Gregg, of The Charter School of Wilmington, is the recipient of the B. Bradford Barnes Memorial Scholarship. This award is given in honor of the former speaker of the state House of Representatives to a student enrolling at the University of Delaware.
Valerie Irma Hyett, of Paul M. Hodgson Vocational Technical High School, received the Herman M. Holloway, Sr. Memorial Scholarship. This award is given in honor of the first black state senator in Delaware to a student enrolling at Delaware State University.
Chantel S. Sessoms, of Caravel Academy, and Dylan Cole Oakes, of Christiana High School, received the Charles L. Hebner Memorial Scholarship. This award is given in honor of the former speaker of the State House of Representatives to students majoring in the humanities or social sciences. Oakes will attend UD; Sessoms is going to DSU.
In addition, 50 students were awarded the Diamond State Scholarship and 28 students received the Robert C. Byrd Honors Scholarship. Winners of the Diamond State Scholarship receive $1,250 per year while Robert C. Byrd Honors Scholarship recipients receive $1,500 per year, based upon funding from the U.S. Congress. They assist students attending regionally accredited colleges in any state. (See the local winners below.)
