In one, rain soaked half of lacrosse, the Blue prevailed 5-3 over White in the girls senior All-Star game Saturday, June 13.
As soon as the first half ended, thunder returned, causing the game to initially be delayed for 30 minutes at the University of Delaware’s Rullo Stadium. But organizers decided 10 minutes later to not play the second half.
St. Andrew’s midfield Corrine Armistead scored two goals to lead the Blue. Concord’s Kristine Lynch and Red Lion Christian’s Alexa Green and Melanie Hartman each scored once. Cape Henlopen’s Raelyn Grogan and Charter School of Wilmington’s Anna Cochran each had an assist.
Cape Henlopen goalie Leigh Ann Redefer had five saves to help Blue to the win.
Alexis I. duPont’s Grace Guillebeau, Tatnall’s Olivia Walker and Dover’s Reesiah Hopkins each scored for White. Caesar Rodney goalie Taylor Smith had four saves and Brandywine goalie Kasia Dinkeloo had one save for White.

A.I.s’ Guillebeau, of Greenville, said both teams had equal talent and had fun playing a good, albeit short game.
“It wasn’t too serious,” she said. “It was a great way to end the season and the past four years. I had fun playing even in the rain.”
Blue’s Sara Alpaugh, of Concord, said everyone’s sprits were high despite the gloomy day.
“We were really enthusiastic to play the second half, but they called it,” she said. “What made it fun is that all these girls are really talented. When we practiced together that one time on Thursday, everything just clicked.”
After the game, Cape Henlopen’s Redefer and St. Mark’s Courtney Schweizer each received the Jay Spilecki Memorial Scholarship. The $1,000 scholarships go to high school players who plan to pursue lacrosse in college and are in good academic standing in honor of Spilecki, who played lacrosse at Brandywine. He died in a car accident.
Redefer, headed to Mary Washington, and Schweizer, headed to Johns Hopkins, were both outstanding lacrosse players and student scholars in high school, said organizers Sue and Jerry Spilecki.
Schweizer’s scholarship will be donated in her name to the youth lacrosse program of her choice because she has received a full scholarship to play for Johns Hopkins, Sue Spilecki said.
Schweizer said she was excited to win the award, which she learned about her freshman year.
“I knew I wanted to play in college,” she said. “I just love everything about the award, so I’m really happy that I got it.”
