'Tainted syringe' claim leads to deadly weapons charges

Delaware State Police have charged 37-year-old Kevin M. Cox with possession of a deadly weapon during the commission of a felony after he used a syringe he claimed was tainted with AIDS to rob stores in Rehoboth Beach and Brandywine Hundred.

Police said Cox was connected to a robbery at Casapulla's in Lighthouse Plaza in Rehoboth on Jan. 23 and with an attempted robbery at Supercuts Hair Salon on Marsh Road in Brandywine on Jan. 25. In both robberies, police said Cox threatened people with a hypodermic syringe he said was tainted with the AIDS virus.

Cox was arrested Jan. 29 and charged with aggravated menacing, possession of a deadly weapon during the commission of a felony, attempted robbery and robbery. Police said he is also a suspect in two robberies in Delaware County, Pa. Bail was set at $93,000 and Cox was sent to the Howard Young Correctional Institute.
