Newark, Del. —

Paraprofessionals and secretaries in the Christina School District now have three-year contracts in place, retroactive to 2007. But they will not get raises similar to the three-year deal that was made with teachers earlier this summer.

The Christina board approved the contracts for teachers' aides and secretaries at its meeting August 12 at Leasure Elementary School. Director of Human Resources Josette Johnson said little about the contracts before the vote, noting simply that the they were negotiated and ratified by each of the employee groups, and they are good through 2010.

Similar to teachers, paraprofessional and secretary raises will not will not come from local funds, Johnson said after the meeting. The state usually provides the majority of funding for public school employees. Raises for state employees are determined in the annual state budget.
