As a recent breast cancer survivor who completed treatment last October, I cannot imagine where my husband Matthew and I would be right now, if we had not had exceptional medical insurance. As the bills kept coming in and the insurance company, thankfully, kept paying them, I was aghast at what we would have had to pay without a good medical plan.
The reality is, we would be up to our ears in debt. The most scary part is that you really don't know how good your insurance is until you face a situation like this – when it is too late to get better insurance, if you can afford it, because now you have a pre-existing condition.
In response to my experience, I am working with the Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition to put together a concert to raise funds for the DBCC to service the underinsured facing breast cancer. I had promised the great staff at the Helen Graham Center that I would sing for them when I was finished with treatment.
With the help and support of my friends, family, business associates, fellow singers, this idea is finally coming to fruition! “Celebration of Life through Music” is Nov. 21, 7 p.m. at the Opera Delaware Studios on South Poplar St. in Wilmington. In memoriam to Wendi Fox Pedicone and Karen Wenger. $25, www.debreastcancer.org.
Performers include the Opera Delaware Chorus, Wilmington Children's Chorus, Jeff Miller, Robert Demers - Bass Baritone, David Dupont – Baritone, Anne Marie Dupre – Soprano, and Jan Clairmont – Tenor.
