A letter to the editor of February 7, 2010 by Sandra Ware contained misleading comments.
The low income housing ordinance was retitled as moderate income and finally workforce to give it better spin, although the body of the ordinance with its subsidies remain the same. Many of those objecting to this ordinance noted it would essentially be a rezoning of large tracts through out the county without going through the rezoning process. Others objected that the ordinance would permit people to skip the bottom rungs of the housing ladder, which most people must climb via discipline and sacrifice. Developers would receive by right significant housing density bonuses to include virtually the same workforce house as the more expensive market-based house next door. Subsidies include reduced building permit fees, minimal school impact fees and reduced maintenance corporation fees.
There was a great deal of heated public objection while the few in favor liked the idea of getting a new home which they could not afford in a community which they also could not afford. A number of people said this sounded like “take from those according to their abilities and give to those according to their needs.” Interestingly, it was Karl Marx, the founder of socialism, who used these words.
Ms. Ware appears to be an elitist who thinks she knows more what people desire than people themselves and puts herself above being a NIMBY. She should take my self test and ask herself why she lives where she does and would she support something which unexpectedly and dramatically changed adjacent to her home to negatively change her quality of life. My guess is she would realize she is a closet NIMBY.
