Wilmington, Del. —

Local crime is not a mere local issue.  Weapons and drugs do not simply materialize in our communities; rather they travel great distances and cross many borders before arriving in our neighborhoods.  The issue is inescapably national and requires federal intervention.

The Bush administration fails to acknowledge this reality.  Their hands-off philosophy is backward and inadequate and has only served to hamstring local efforts to stem crime.  Fortunately, Senator Biden has long exhibited a more competent grasp of the task at hand.  His leadership in the 1990s put more cops on the street and paved the way for successful programs to treat recidivism.

The Senator’s recently unveiled package of crime-fighting legislation offers a bold and progressive means of combating the problems facing our local communities.  It’s the sort of antidote we need.  Biden deserves commendation for his stalwart judgment and long dedication to this issue.
