Methodist Country House, a Peninsula United Methodist Homes community on Kennett Pike, plans to take the household slogan “recycle, reduce, reuse” to a new level when it sells of an entire house by bits and pieces.

Up for sale: a staircase, fireplace mantles, corner cupboards, doors, flooring, ironwork, a brick patio, stone walls, antique fixtures, shrubs, even an elegant entryway and slate roof.

The 49-year-old upscale retirement community acquired the 99-year-old Charis House when it bought adjacent property from Winterthur Museum and Country Estate to build 10 new luxury cottages.

Pre-Demolition Sales of Philadelphia will manage the recycling, with a two-day “priced to sell” sale on the property on Saturday and Sunday.

PUMH has not yet applied for a demolition permit, according to New Castle County records, but once the company files paperwork explaining its intention to demolish the property, the county will establish that the building is more than 50 years old before beginning the historic review process.

Demolition permits cannot be issued on historic properties without the approval of the Historical Review Board, which holds a monthly public hearing to discuss development of historic properties.
