Wilmington, Del. —

New Castle County will hold a public meeting on its controversial workforce housing legislation next week.

Recently, the County has seen a pushback on the legislation – especially from residents living south of the Chesapeake & Delaware Canal – where several projects are currently working their way through the approval process.

The legislation, approved last fall, gives density bonuses to developers who incorporate affordable homes into their subdivisions. But some in the lower part of the county say their rural roads can’t handle the increased traffic and their schools can’t handle more children.

To that end, the two councilmen representing that portion of the county plan to introduce legislation this month that would put a stay on the ordinance.

County Executive Chris Coons acknowledged some adjustments might be needed, and said the meeting was being scheduled to offer the public an opportunity to provide input into the potential changes.

In addition to the October 22 workshop, residents may submit comments or suggest changes via e-mail at LandUse@nccde.org.
