Newark, Del. —

Drivers speeding through Newark will soon face stiffer fines thanks to an ordinance approved by Newark City Council on Aug. 11.

Under the new fine structure, which will take effect September 1, motorists caught traveling less than 16 miles an hour over the speed limit will face a fine based on how fast they were driving.

For example, someone caught driving five miles an hour over the speed limit will pay a fine of $25, while someone caught driving six miles an hour over the speed limit will pay a fine of $36, plus court costs.

Drivers pulled over for traveling more than 15 miles an hour over the speed limit will face a linear fine structure that increases from $240 to $600 for driving 40 miles an hour over the speed limit.
