Q. Why do you think the Hockessin Business Association is important and what do you hope the group accomplishes in the coming year?

A. I believe in community and I think that Hockessin has a wide variety of businesses that together give a sense of place and originality. I would like to see the HBA continue to develop their marketing plans to include a shop local campaign. I’d also like to see more coordinated events like we did this Halloween and holiday season.

Q. Why do you enjoy being in the book business?

Meet Rebecca

Name: Rebecca Dowling
Residence: Pike Creek
Business: Hockessin Book Shelf owner
Length in position: 2 and a half years
Bookstore experience: worked at Hockessin Book Shelf since it opened in 2001

A. I love books! I really enjoy helping customers find a book they will love or find a new author. We have a really great staff at the Hockessin Book Shelf. We know books -- from romance to fiction to mystery and kids. We are all big time readers and are really passionate about what we do.

Q. What is your favorite book and why?

A. I have a lot of favorite books but one of the most memorable from the last 10 years is “Shadow of the Wind” by Carlos Ruiz Zafon. It has everything you want in a book: a mystery, love story, twisting plot, etc. It’s almost impossible to put down.

Q. What is one key to being an effective leader?

A. I do not ask anything of my staff that I would not do myself. I also believe that it’s important to identify the strengths of those around you and allow leadership to grow out of that.

Q. Describe a pivotal moment in your life.

A. Over 10 years ago I stepped away from social work after getting a little burned out and went to work in a book store. I did it to recharge myself and do something I love. And here I am owning my own store.

Q. What is the best advice you’ve gotten?

A. Do what you love, but remember it’s a business.
