Centreville will soon be sending a mile-long message to motorists speeding through the village – slow down and admire the view.
Construction is set to begin on the Centreville Streetscape in December, with landscaping, safety and other traffic calming improvements on a .7-mile stretch of Kennett Pike through town.
The Newark contractor CNS Construction won the bid at $1.2 million last week, and expects to finish by next November, according to DelDOT community relations officer Bob King.
Drivers should expect congestion due to lane closures on Kennett Pike, he said, but at least one lane will remain open throughout the project.
The work includes: improved crosswalk visibility, signage and drainage; permanent bulb-outs; road resurfacing and standardizing parking lane width and markings.
The project will also enhance Centreville’s bicycle and pedestrian network by connecting sidewalks, making them compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act and striping bike lanes.
Mature trees and existing landscaping plantings will be protected throughout construction, according to DelDOT.
Project funding came through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, which allocated $140.9 million for highway, bridges, pedestrian and transit-related projects in Delaware.
Nearly three-quarters of the ARRA construction projects have been advertised and 64 percent have been awarded, DelDOT reported. All funds for the projects must be obligated by Feb. 17.
DelDOT has completed 13 ARRA projects. Another 13 are under construction with three more pending construction.
