Motorists in Centreville are encountering both day and nighttime lane closures as part of the Centerville Streetscape Improvement Project.
The project, which extends from Centre Meeting Road to Snuff Mill Road along Route 52 (Kennett Pike), will include sidewalk improvements, upgrades to Americans with Disabilities Act standards, improvements to pedestrian safety, traffic calming features, crosswalk delineation, and landscaping improvements.
The project began Monday, Dec. 7 and will continue until late 2010, the state Department of Transportation said. The construction will be completed within 299 calendar days, depending on the weather.
This project is funded through the American Recovery & Reinvestment Act, known as stimulus funding. This project and other ARRA projects are revitalizing Delaware’s economy by preserving and creating jobs.
The Centreville project involves the replacement of existing sidewalks and construction of new concrete and brick sidewalks. Existing bicycle lanes will be maintained at the current location and, along with the crosswalks, will be striped for improved visibility and safety. Sections within the project will be infilled with new curbing and gutters, and existing curbing and gutters will be replaced to improve drainage.
The roadway will be resurfaced by mill and overlay. Minor roadway base widening is anticipated to provide a sufficient width for parking lanes. Curb bulb outs and grass buffer strips are to be landscaped with street trees and shrubs. Signing and stripping will also be addressed.
CNS Construction Corporation/Talley Brothers, Inc. of Newark, Delaware, submitted a bid of $1.28 million, the lowest of eight bids received.
