The City of Wilmington is set to begin a sewer improvement project this month in and around the Ed “Porky” Oliver Golf Course.
The million dollar project, funded partly by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, includes the installation and expansion of storm water retention ponds and storm sewer improvements.
The project’s ultimate goal is to improve the water quality of Silverbook Run, a stream that flows from Lancaster Avenue into Elsmere, explained Jeff Bross, an engineer with Duffield Associates.
During major rainstorms, storm water overruns the sewer system, he said, causing both storm water and sewage to overflow into Silverbrook Run.
To prevent that, one storm water retention pond will be installed on the University of Delaware’s Wilmington campus and an existing pond will be expanded, including the addition of wetlands to help improve water quality.
A new retention basin will be installed at the southeast corner of the golf course, near Swarthmore Road, and connected by a pipe to the existing storm sewer system at Greenhill Avenue.
Storm sewer improvements will also be installed at:
- West 2nd St. between Corbin Court and Ogle Ave.
- Greenhill Ave. between McDonough Road and West 7th St.
- West 6th St. between Hawley St. and Rodman St.
As part of the project, curb replacements will be installed on Greenhill Avenue between West 2nd St. and West 3rd St.
The project is scheduled to be finished by May, Bross said, and residents should expect intermittent street closures.
