Fifteen students from Wilmington University’s Business Fusion program have organized the Green Energy Solutions event to help make the University more environmentally friendly. Green Energy Solutions will be held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., Feb. 10 in the Alumni Center on the New Castle campus and will feature proposals on the benefits of shifting to solar power, wind power or geothermal power. Each of the presentations will be made by a group of students who have researched how Wilmington University and the general community could benefit from using green energy technology.

The students are participating in this event as part of a real world project for their Project Management course. Students are responsible for the concept, planning and implementation of a project to be completed within five weeks using the knowledge they have gained throughout the course. The students have been split into five groups: operations and facilities management, financial management, solar power, wind power and geothermal power.

Wilmington University has been striving to be more earth friendly for many years now. As part of that effort, the University recycles paper, plastic bottles and cell phones (to local women's shelters). The University also saves energy by using Energy Star rated copiers, using an eco-friendly preferred printer and has replaced lighting with T8 fluorescent lighting, which uses less energy. New Castle and Dover campuses have upgrade 95 percent of classrooms to wattstopper light switches, which use motion sensors that time out after fifteen minutes.

In addition to these environmentally friendly programs, Wilmington University has created the Green Team, a volunteer group of faculty, staff and students who strive to raise awareness on campus, at home and in the community. The Team has been working to establish and implement sustainability programs that improve environmental quality, decrease waste and conserve natural resources and energy. Since their inception in November 2006, the team has participated in many events on and off campus including the adopt-a-highway cleanup.

Green Energy Solutions is free and open to the public and light refreshments will be served. In case of severe weather the event will be held Feb. 11.
