Chip MacKelcan, head of Sanford School, recently announced the appointment of Elizabeth (Libbie) Anne Farmer Zimmer as the next head of lower school. Zimmer will succeed Nancy Hebard who will retire in June after seventeen years as the leader of the lower school division. The lower school serves children in junior kindergarten through fourth grade.
Zimmer brings fourteen years of experience to her new role at Sanford. After launching her career as a public elementary school teacher, Zimmer joined the faculty of the Darlington School in Rome, Georgia. She has held a number of different positions at Darlington, but her current role as founding director of the learning center has demonstrated her capacity for innovation and leadership in early elementary education.
Zimmer graduated with a bachelor of science degree from Meredith College, in N.C. and a master of education from Virginia Commonwealth University. She is married to Casey Zimmer, a teacher and administrator at Darlington School. The Zimmers have two children.
