The Center for Internet Security, through the U.S. Cyber Challenge (USCC) initiative, announced the winners of the Cyber Foundations competition, a national online contest designed to test the computer networking skills of high school students while introducing them to the growing field of information technology. The top scoring students in each school and state earned awards for their achievements.
The 2011 Delaware winners are:
Kevin Schiavi, Salesianum School
Yura Kim, Cab CallowaySchool of the Arts
Jacob Davis, Charter School of Wilmington
Kevin placed 7th, Yura 14th, and Jacob 16th out of 1,000 students who competed nationwide.
Other Delaware schools’ top scoring champions are: Gina Picciano, Padua Academy; Austin Ryan, Concord High School; Parth Gadani, Delmar Senior High School; Brianna Navarro, Red Lion Christian Academy; Benjamin Keeper, St. Mark's High School; and Rubal Bagga, William Penn High School.
The Cyber Foundations competition was conducted throughout March and April and featured a series of timed quizzes to test aptitude in the three most important foundational skills of effective cyber security: networking, operating systems, and system administration. Students were provided with tutorials and training materials to review in each of the three subject areas and then participated in a series of increasingly challenging quizzes focused on those foundational skills.
Delaware’s Chief Information Officer Jim Sills, III said, “Delaware students performed exceptionally well in this competition, placing three students in the top 16 in the nation. We are excited and proud that so many young Delawareans are attracted to the ’hot’ and growing field of cyber security.”
