Wilmington, Del. —

One in five Delawareans are functionally illiterate. That means they cannot read and write well enough to perform everyday tasks. In addition, there are many others that need to learn English in order to survive in our culture.

You can help.

Literacy Volunteers Serving Adults trains volunteers to teach basic reading, and English as a second language to adults in northern New Castle County. All you need is a high school diploma and some free time to begin making a difference in the lives of adults and their families in our community. Work one-on-one, host a small group or volunteer at the center.

Volunteer training starts Wednesday, Oct. 8, 9:30 a.m. to noon at the Aldersgate Methodist Church on Concord Pike in Brandywine Hundred. The training runs Mondays and Wednesdays throughout October.
