Forget the generation gap. Dr. Georgia Witkin, senior editor at Grandparents.com, shares her favorite activities grandparents and grandchildren can do together in honor of National Grandparents Day, Sept. 1.

  • DIY Projects. Take on an activity you both enjoy, like building a birdhouse or planting a garden, and do it together.
  • Homemade Spa Treatments. Pamper yourselves by making body scrubs and giving and getting manicures.
  • Backyard Campout. Rain or shine, pitch a tent, tell ghost stories, and play board games.
  • Play Silly Charades. Fill out charade suggestion cards and take turns acting them out.
  • Scavenger Hunt. Leave clues for each other around the house for a prize at the end.
  • Host a Cooking Show. Make something tasty together while pretending you’re on a cooking show.
  • Paint Glass. Go around the house painting windows with washable window paint.
  • Do Yoga. Get down and get your ohm together by practicing basic yoga and making funny sounds while doing it. Bark for downward dog.
  • Make Slippery Slime. Use Warner’s slime recipe to make good to play with.
  • Share Your Vinyl Collection. Show off your record collection and share great music on your turntable while dancing together.

“The best way to celebrate National Grandparents Day is by connecting with your grandchildren,” says Witkin. “Find something you both like to do and create some special memories together.”
