Who: Kids age 5 and up who live in the Greater Hockessin – Greenville area

What: A friendly competition between neighborhoods in three events: relay races, softball toss and long jump.

5 reasons to go, even if you’re not competing

1. The kids are up anyway – why not let them burn off some excess energy so they might take a nap after the parade?

2. You can pass the time while you’re waiting for the charcoal to heat up.

3. Get your long jump fix now; the next Summer Olympics isn’t until 2012.

4. The Phillies and Mets don’t play until 4:05 p.m.

5. Meet the neighbors – nothing brings a development together like friendly competition.

Where: Hockessin Library and Piedmont fields on Valley Road

When

7:30 a.m. arrival begins
7:45 a.m. parade of neighborhoods
8 a.m. national anthem
8:20 a.m. fun run for ages 5 and under
8:25 a.m. competition begins
10:45 a.m. fun run for ages 18 and older
11 a.m. awards ceremony

Why: Bring glory to your neighborhood and have a chance to dethrone perennial relay champion Stenning Woods. Plus, it’s free fun for the whole family.

How: Visit hgrotary.org/July_4.html to download a team entry form. Email forms to july4th.info@gmail.com.

Not enough kids for a team? Individual "free agents" can be placed on other neighborhood teams the morning of the relays.
