With the inaugural season behind it, The Grand has announced it's “new and improved” 2009-2010 "In the Spotlight" season.

The regional talent competition, back for its second year at The Grand, will be broken down into six new preliminary areas: dance, comedy, spoken word, band and instrumental music and two dates for singers. Three to five acts from each category will move on to an April 25, 2010 finale to compete for cash and prizes.

Sept. 20 - Dance. Groups of any size and dance in any style are welcome.

Oct. 25 & Feb. 28 - Song. All styles and group sizes for singer/songwriters (not bands).

Nov. 15 - Comedy. One of the biggest draws last year

Jan. 24 - Spoken word.

March 21 - Bands and instrumental music.

All preliminary events take place on the Baby Grand stage. The finale happens in The Grand Opera House, a unique opportunity for local performers.

In its inaugural year, after eleven months searching for the best local talent, The Grand whittled down 100 acts to 20 finalists, and on April 5, they took to the stage to battle in one last performance for the Grand Prize. The comedy category was one of the best draws last season, and M. Dickson, a New York based comedian was crowned the winner, taking home cash and prizes worth over $2,500.

"In the Spotlight" is open to all ages and skills. To really focus the spotlight on local talent, this year competitors must live within 50 miles of The Grand.

Registration, which opened July 15, is $10. The first 20 applications in each area will be accepted.
