Greenville, Del. —

Throughout October, Salon Pasca will add a streak of pink to customers' hair for those who make a $15 donation to the Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition.

“It’s something temporary and fun,” says the Greenhill Avenue salon co-owner Ann Tasker. “When I put one of the removable extensions in my hair, people notice and ask about it, and it gives me a chance to talk about a good cause.”

U.S. women have a one in seven chance of developing invasive breast cancer during her lifetime, up from one in 11 in thirty years ago. It is the second leading cause of cancer death for all U.S. women (after lung cancer) and the leading cause for women 20 to 59.

Delaware’s incidence is slightly lower than the U.S. average, but its mortality is higher, making it the seventh highest in the nation, according to 2006 American Cancer Society numbers. The First State sees 570 new breast cancer cases and 110 deaths among women each year. Among men, there are five new cases and one death each year.

The need for research and treatment is great. One in 11 women diagnosed with invasive breast cancer will die from the disease within five years. At 10 years, nearly one in four will die, and almost half will not survive 20 years.

Tasker says breast cancer eventually touches almost everyone – the salon has many close clients that have battled it, and it even has a wig section to meet the needs of those who have lost their own hair during treatment.

Also as part of the Breast Cancer awareness campaign, Salon Pacsca is discounting every pink product in the store 20 percent – brushes, shampoos and conditioners, and more.
In the salon’s first year of operation last year, they raised $200 for the Coalition through their pink promotional.
