Claymont, Del. —

Dozens of mallgoers dropped their shopping bags to participate in a line dancing marathon around the center of the Tri-State Mall in Claymont during MeJah Books' third annual community day.

The art of line dancing is combining a few simple combinations of dance steps in time to classic rhythm and blues music, said Victor Nichols of Bear.

Some of the steps, like the Fred Sanford, can be challenging, but it is a lot of fun to dance with a big group of people, he said.

“Line dancing gives you a sense of belonging. It’s a great way to unwind and de-stress,” said Nichols.

Line dancing is growing in popularity in Delaware and throughout the United States because it is something everyone can do with a little practice, said Bob Thomas, executive producer of Urbanchannels Network, who helped publicize community day.

About 40 students attend weekly line dancing classes at the Tri-State Mall and Thomas said local groups are always inventing new dances.

MeJah Books hosts community day every year to raise awareness of the social and health benefits of line dancing, he said.
