Edgemoor, Del. —

Eastern Brandywine Hundred Democrats will choose their candidate to succeed Fox Point’s Diana McWilliams Thursday night.

McWilliams, who officially resigned from her sixth district seat Monday just 12 days after being re-elected to a third term, is moving to New Mexico with her family where she has accepted a job as the executive director of a crisis prevention group.

Now a special election, to be scheduled by Gov. Ruth Ann Minner in the next 10 days, will be held to fill the 6th District seat. On Monday, six candidates threw their hats in the ring for consideration.

The 24-member 6th District Democratic Committee will vote for who it will nominate in the race, after hearing from each candidate on Thursday. Candidates who did not attend Monday’s meeting can still be considered by attending Thursday.

Among those expressing interest in the seat were Brandywine School Board President Debra Heffernan; Michael Migliore, an attorney for the House of Representatives; and Fox Point civic leader Jonathan Husband, an employee with the New Castle County Department of Special Services.

Others who expressed interest in the open seat were attorney Ciro Poppiti; financial analyst Paul Dorsey; and Nancy DiStefano, a labor relations specialist for the Delaware Department of Transportation.

After each candidate makes their pitch Thursday, the committee will vote. The winning candidate must receive a majority of the vote, meaning several rounds of voting could be needed before a nominee is selected. The meeting is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at the Edgemoor Community Center on Duncan Road.
