Seven hundred volunteers collected 16 tons of trash from the Christina River and its tributaries during the 18th annual Christina River Watershed Cleanup on April 18.

Groups collected trash from the banks of Naamans Creek, the Delaware River, Churchmans Marsh and the White Clay Creek during the four-hour cleanup.

Since the cleanup began, more than 10,000 volunteers have hauled 300 tons of trash from the rivers and creeks, including car tires, appliances, household items, plastic bottles and styrofoam containers.

The Christina River Watershed provides 75 percent of the drinking water for residents of New Castle County.
