The year is 1933 and alien sludge monsters intend to invade Earth. Molly, a Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter, along with her assistant, Timmy, and Ben, a librarian, must join forces to foil the aliens’ evil deed, in the live-action graphic novel: “Intergalactic Nemesis,” which is coming to The Grand on Friday.

Showtime is at 8 p.m. The production is in partnership with The Comic Book Shop in Wilmington.

“Intergalactic Nemesis,” written and directed by Jason Neulander of Austin, Texas, is a traveling production that features three live actors, one keyboardist, a foley artist and 1,200 graphic novel images, in which the images are projected on a big screen.

The actors, who each play multiple characters, perform while the images – along with the music and sound effects created from the foley artist and keyboardist – offer deeper insight into this dramatic, pulp world the audience has been invited to.

Though “Intergalactic Nemesis” debuted in 2010 in Austin, Neulander says the humble origins of the production dates back to the ‘90s, when he and friends wrote it to be a traditional radio show, which was performed in a coffee shop in Austin.

“[We] decided to create our no-budget version of “Star Wars” and “Raiders of the Lost Ark” by writing and creating this adventure radio play,” he said. “We had no intention of it lasting beyond doing it once, really. But it just ended up being more popular than what we expected. Over the course of the years I kept on bringing it back and every time I brought it back I would keep on reworking the material a little bit, and audiences would just grow, grow and grow.”

In 2009, Jason and his team were invited to bring the radio version of the show to a 2,400-seat theater in Austin. At first he was skeptical of the idea.

“I felt like that venue was just too big for the intimate experience of a radio play,” Neulander said. “My initial instinct was to decline the offer.”

Neulander –  who at the time was also working with illustrator Tim Doyle on adapting the radio play to a seven-issue comic series, which would later be collected into a graphic novel – said he had a change of heart once the following question crossed his mind: “What if we projected the comic book artwork on the screen?”

He ran with the idea and it took about 15 months to create the artwork, but in September of 2010, he premiered the live-action version of “Intergalactic Nemesis” in Austin. The popularity of the show has “taken off like wildfire,” he said. “The idea that theaters from all over the country are embracing the show and audiences are coming out to see it is incredible – a dream come true.”

Sarah Titus, co-owner of The Comic Book Shop with her husband, Patrick, is looking forward to “Intergalactic Nemesis” coming to The Grand, since she was entertained by the drama-filled comic series.

“One of the things that I did like about the book is there is backstabbing, romance, time travel and magic,” Titus said.  “Many different themes are covered in this simplistic and wholesome story.”
