In this time of economic belt-tightening, everyone is looking to get a little more for their money. How about four plays for the price of one?

That’s the bargain theater-goers can expect at the Chapel Street Player’s annual One Act Showcase on Jan. 15 and 16, where four short plays will hit the stage, all vying for the audience’s vote.

The winning play will be performed at the Delaware Theater Association’s statewide one act competition.

Ideal for theater-lovers with short attention spans, these four plays have something for everyone:

1. “Strut,” written by locals Lanie Carlson and Judith A. David, tells the story of a group of women who come together to build a house, and instead get a chance to see the world through each others' eyes as they all give advice to the youngest woman.

2. “The Lover,” written by Harold Pinter, is a drama/comedy about a husband, a wife and the wife’s lover, but all is not as it seems. The play is about hidden desires and explores the contrast between the lives we lead and the love lives we really want.

3. “The Dirty Old Man,” written by Lewis John Carlino, is a contemporary drama about a lonely old man who strikes up a conversation with a pretty, teenage girl. An innocent kiss between them is interrupted by the girl’s violent boyfriend.

4. “The Brute,” is a modern retelling of the play by Russian playwright Anton Chekov. The comedy tells the story of a reclusive widow, Mrs. Popov, who is hounded by her neighbor, Mr. Smirnov, for money owed him by her dead husband.

Tickets for the One-Act Showcase cost $10 and can be purchased at chapelstreetplayers.org.
