Wilmington native returns to Newark for benefit concert
Folk meets classical music when Helen Avakian takes the stage at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship in Newark on August 24.
The concert is a benefit with her husband, classical guitarist Terry Champlin, for Newark’s homeless as well as a record release event for Avakian’s newest album, “I Love the Moon.”
The fourth album from Avakian, “I Love the Moon” blends folk guitar and descriptive lyrics with great tempo changes and Avakian’s wonderful voice, which is reminiscent of Jewel or Natalie Merchant. What’s most striking about the album is the seamless change in style from track to track. Each song feels like it’s own without straying too far from the folk sound. And, being an ex-New Jersian, I can appreciate any song about the Garden State (Track 5, “Greetings From Asbury Park”).
“I Love the Moon” was co-produced with Scott Petito, known for working with Keith Richards and James Taylor.
Avakian has shared the stage with Peter Yarrow of Peter, Paul and Mary, and has appeared on WNYC Public Radio and PBS Television. She was also voted “Number One Favorite Acoustic Act” by Rhythm and News Magazine four times.
A Brandywine High School graduate, Avakian began her studies with Arden singer, guitarist and teacher Judy Kay. She went on to major in music at the University of Delaware and studied with guitarists Christiaan Taggert and Judith Kay.
The concert will feature her musical partner and husband, classical guitarist Terry Champlin. Originally educated as a theoretical physicist at MIT, Champlin switched to music at the age of 21. He has written hundreds of pieces for all mediums, from orchestra to solo classical guitar.
Champlin’s music has been performed in Korea, Japan, Mexico, Greece and Europe and he is on the faculties of Vassar College and Mannes College of Music in New York City.
The concert, August 24 at 2 p.m., benefits the Newark Empowerment Center and Willa Road Day Care. The event takes place at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship on 420 Willa Road in Newark.
The suggested $10 donation and a portion of CD sales will go toward the Empowerment Center. Concert reservations can be made by calling 239-0577 or emailing lucille@karnik.com. More information online at www.uufn.org.
