Hockessin’s patriotic traditions continue this year with the annual parade and fireworks, to be held rain or shine. Here's what to expect.
Patriotism on parade
What: A traditional parade lineup including: antique cars, politicians, marching bands, fire engines, ambulances, floats and scouts
When: The parade gets rolling (literally) at 3 p.m.
Where to watch: Line up on both sides of Old Lancaster Pike between St. Mary of the Assumption Church and Valley Road. The reviewing stand is near Hockessin Memorial Hall.
What to know: Watch out for projectiles (candy, beach balls, etc.) being thrown from passing floats. Spectators start setting up chairs early, so be prepared to elbow your way in if you come late. Old Lancaster Pike will be closed to car traffic (unless you happen to be chauffeuring Miss Delaware), so plan accordingly.
What to bring: Canned goods and non-perishable food items. Then, watch for the St. Mary's Freedom from Hunger youth group float -- a flatbead truck the teens hope to load up to help area food banks replenish their stocks.
New this year: The Hockessin-Greenville Rotary will be awarding a trophy for the best presenting float.

Light up the night
What: Hockessin’s fireworks display begins at dusk (about 9 p.m.)
Where to watch: Bring a blanket or a few camp chairs to the library soccer fields and enjoy the show.
What to watch for: An astonishing afterglow of fireflies that light up the old stand of evergreens beside the library-soccer field path in mid-summer.
