After a four-year hiatus, the Brandywine Brewing Company is making a comeback in Greenville.
“We’re putting the band back together, like the Blues Brothers,” said restaurant owner Dave Dietz.
A stone’s throw from its old home, the new BBC Tavern and Grill will open later this month in the former Pizza by Elizabeth’s on Kennett Pike, a landmark pizzeria that recently moved a few buildings down to expand its offerings.
Dietz, 44, of Unionville, Pa., said he’s designed the restaurant to look like a pub. There's dark paneling, a massive mahogany bar, fireplaces and artwork reminiscent of a hunter’s club. The restaurant will seat 180 inside, plus a few on the patio.
Patrons can expect the same good food and friendly service the Brandywine Brewing Company was known for.

And customers of his previous restaurant will notice some familiar choices on the menu, like hot soft pretzels, crab and corn chowder and Jam Joe’s Nachos. The similarities don’t end there – 25 percent of his old staff have come back onboard, he said.
The biggest difference between the old and new restaurants is that BBC Tavern and Grill is not a microbrewery, he said.
However, beer lovers ought not to be disappointed: the restaurant will feature more than 60 beers, with a focus on American microbreweries. It will also have a wine list that’s almost too long to fit on one page, with bottles ranging from $22 to $165.
Dietz said he worked hard to keep prices reasonable -- $9 - $12 for sandwiches, $15 - $25 for entrees.
Price is a big issue for people today, he said, yet despite the economic downturn, demand for eating out remains strong in Greenville, if the lines at Buckley’s Tavern and Pizza by Elizabeth’s on a Saturday night are any indication.
After the extended hiatus, it’s going to be a lot of fun to be back in Greenville with a tavern that will be the culmination of his experience as a restaurateur, he said.
If the new restaurant has a motto, it might be best defined by the Latin inscription carved into the door, Intra Et Non Iam Sities, which means “enter and thirst no more.”
“For good company, friendship and food, we mean that,” he said.
